Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is just 9km south of the city. You can reach the centre in 15-20 minutes on one of the regular trains. Available from directly underneath the terminal building, these cost around €5 each way. A slower but cheaper option is the airport bus, leaving every 30 minutes and travelling to popular points across the city. Taxis are also available in the arrivals concourse, but are quite expensive, normally costing €40. So why not hire a car so you can travel on your own terms around Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands?
